Over the past few years, longtime Dungeons & Dragons publisher WizKids has released a number of popular DnD board games, with recent titles like Trials of Tempus and Onslaught picking up solid reviews from both fans and critics. The company also has a number of new DnD games in the works, including the city-resource management game Builders of Baldur’s Gate, which is slated for release in 2025.
Now, WizKids has just announced another entry under their Dungeons & Dragons license in the form of Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn, a map building game set in the Forgotten Realms. The game is coming out in late 2025 but is available for pre-order now from your local game store or WizKids. Below, we map out all the details
What is “Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn” about?
Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn is a new Dungeons & Dragons map-building card game set in the Forgotten Realms and created by award-winning tabletop game designer Phil Walker-Harding.
In the game, players build detailed maps by drawing, drafting and playing cards. On each turn, a player chooses a map card from their hand and places it facedown on the table. All players then reveal their cards and add them to their individual maps, scoring points by completing unique quests and revealing landmarks and cities. The player then passes their remaining hand to the person to their left and a new round starts. After 15 rounds, the player with the most points from completed quests wins the game.
Notably, the game also features artwork by fantasy cartographer Gerralt Landman, along with illustrations from a number of existing Dungeons & Dragons game books from Wizards of the Coast.
What’s included in the “Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn” game?
The new game includes the following elements:
- 116 Map Cards
- 5 Starting Cards
- 1 Map Maker Card
- 10 Quest Cards
- 2 Area Cards
- 5 Reference Cards
- 50 Exploration Cubes
- 4 Quest Tokens
- 5 Adventurer Pawns
- 1 Score Pad
When is “Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn” coming out?
The game is currently scheduled for release in June 2025, at which point it should be widely available from your local game store. You can, however, pre-order now to ensure you get your hands on a copy. Bear in mind, however, that there may be additional time required for shipping.
How much is “Edge of the Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn”?
The game will retail for $24.99 USD, which is considerably cheaper than most other WizKids titles and really reflects its status as a card game (notably Trials of Tempus retails for around $99 USD, but includes significantly more game components, including fully painted WizKids miniatures).
Final Thoughts
WizKids has been doing a fantastic job lately with their DnD board games, and Edge of the Realms looks to continue that tradition. The concept and gameplay mechanics sound solid and offer a welcome departure from the skirmish-focused games that WizKids is normally associated with. It’s also a great sign that WizKids has brough on a game design talent like Phil Walker-Harding who has made a name for himself with other popular card games like Sushi Go and Silver & Gold.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on Edge of the Edge of the Realms: Fields of Faerûn in the days ahead and will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
